Conference Package B – Beyond the Basics

This package includes three full-length conference quality presentations with more in-depth information in three specific subject areas: composition, mapping, and recitation. These video presentations include:

Composition the Charlotte Mason Way by Liz Cottrill

Teaching composition is like snakes in Ireland,” said Charlotte Mason. How then does a child learn to write? Whether you love to write or know you cannot, you can guide children to write because her method allows them to learn in a consecutive, progressive, and natural way. This workshop will unroll the road to writing from first through twelfth grade so you see the big picture. Whether your child has a flair for poetry, novels, or simply wants to make his thoughts known when necessary, he can, he ought, and he will do so by following her curriculum. (1.4 GB, 49 min)

Mapping by Emily Kiser

Charlotte Mason tells us that geography should be learned chiefly through maps. In this workshop, we will work through the use of maps in a Charlotte Mason education, from early maps and plans of our own home to studying the maps of far-off lands. We will have a chance to practice making maps of our own as well as asking and answering the type of map questions Miss Mason insisted upon before each geography lesson. (2 GB, 1:12 hr)

Recitation: The Children’s Art by Nicole Williams

Charlotte Mason said, “There is hardly any ‘subject’ so educative and so elevating as that which Mr. Burrell has happily described as ‘The Children’s Art.’” In this session, you will learn what recitation is, why it is so valuable, and how it differs from memorization. We will then explore its practice from the first reading lessons through adulthood. (1.9 GB, 1:07 hr)

Conference Package A – The Basics

This package includes three full-length conference quality presentations on the fundamentals of a Charlotte Mason education with information suitable for the curious, uninformed, beginners, or anyone wanting to strengthen their understanding of Miss Mason’s basic ideas. These video presentations include:

Charlotte Mason’s Method, Wise and Purposeful Letting Alone by Emily Kiser

Charlotte Mason said, “[W]ise and purposeful letting alone is the best part of education.” In this session, we will explore the distinctive elements of the Charlotte Mason Method, a philosophy rooted in our created identity as persons, and how to implement her natural method in our individual classrooms. Much of our time will be devoted to the unique role of the teacher in this method as we learn how to practice Masterly Inactivity–what that wise and purposeful letting alone means, and what it doesn’t. (1.7 GB, 1 hr)

The Power of a Narrated Education by Liz Cottrill
Narration is crucial in a Charlotte Mason method of education. “If we have eyes to see and grace to build, [narration] is the ground-plan of his education,” said Charlotte Mason. The simplest learning tool is one our children are born with, naturally gifted at, and which teachers can make use of to make learning both a joy and a permanent possession. This “art” is not optional, but essential. Still, is simply telling after reading enough? Liz will explain the purpose, the pitfalls, and the problems with narration; give practical how-to options; and, renew your trust in the power this practice has to thoroughly educate any student. (1.5 GB, 52 min)

An Introduction to Nature Study by Nicole Williams

Many parents recognize the necessity of out-door time for their children’s physical and mental health, therefore, Charlotte Mason’s idea of nature study sounds great. But what does nature study really constitute? What should be done (or not done) as part of this “out-of-door work,” and how often should it be done? In this workshop, Nicole will take the mystery out of nature study, but not the majesty. (2.5 GB, 1:26 hr)

Geography: At Home in the World

Often we wonder if a Charlotte Mason curriculum is still relevant for children today, living in a multi-cultural, modern world. Yet, if we look closely at the subject of geography, we see that instead of focusing on our own country as we do when we begin teaching history, young children should be exposed to a wide knowledge of all countries to become acquainted with all cultures and climes–even those very different than his own. “Bet let him be at home in any single region; let him see, with the mind’s eye, the people at their work and at their play, the flowers and fruits in their seasons, sympathetically,” (1/275) Charlotte Mason tells us, and this knowledge widens and deepens throughout her curriculum. In this workshop, we walk through the principles and practices of geography teaching in Forms I through VI.

Help and Hope for Teaching Reading TTV

Are you afraid to teach your child to read, or frustrated with your lack of success? This hour will address the practical steps to get started in the crucial responsibility of teaching our children to read. No child is alike in his tackling of this skill, no existing curriculum addresses all the variables, but Charlotte Mason’s way is straightforward and steady. This video includes demonstrations of sight and sound lessons, with some discussion about variations.
